Atlanta is an unincorporated community governed by Briley Township in Montmorency County. Population: 1,831. Township Hall: 11331 West St., Atlanta, MI 49709, (989) 785-4186. This village on the Thunder Bay River, in Briley Township, was founded by lumberman Alfred J. West, of Capac, in 1881, and he became its first postmaster of October 2, 1882. A Civil War veteran, he named it after the Georgia city. The Elk Capital of Michigan, Atlanta is a popular vacation and hunting center. Area forest campgrounds and Clear Lake State Park add to the area's attractions. Deer and elk are a very popular attraction and the fall colors in the area are spectacular each year. Another popular activity is morel mushroom hunting in spring.
